Body, soul and spirit ties are sometimes referred to as "Soul-ties".

To understand body, soul and spirit ties, one has to appreciate the fundamental truth about Godly and ungodly relationships, and agree fully in what is revealed in the light of God's Word.

Also, understanding these relationships can throw light at what point we are in our discipleship journey, and how our links with others now, and in the past, can affect our own personal effectiveness and testimony, as disciples of Jesus Christ.

It is a common error of teaching that we are beings of flesh with a soul and a spirit which is a lesser component. This places emphasis on the importance of the body and its needs, leaving the mind to be inundated with worldly flesh and corrupting influences.

The spirit, the very essence of life, and the eternal component in every human is relegated to third place.

The truth is that the essential component in every human is the human spirit. It is present at our conception and is the with us until our departure in death.. Within the spirit component lies our conscience and intuition. It is the human spirit that Satan seeks to captivate, place in bondage, eschew in evil and to shackle in chains.

The human soul consists of the mind, will and emotions. It is in the mind that our thoughts can lead to good or evil. What we allow into our minds through our sight and hearing will influence what becomes central in our lives, and what we speak or act out in our lives, too effect others.

As we will discuss later, God has given us free will, which means we can be obedient to him, or disobedient.

We will examine the question of soul ties in relation to what we have just said, though if your are interested in learning more, you will find this teaching in greater depth in our other web pages.

Relationship truths.

We are created in the image of God.

(Gen 1:26 NIV) Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

(Gen 1:27 NIV) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

We can relate to others with our spirit, soul and body.

(1 Th 5:23 NIV) May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

What we do on earth has an effect in the spiritual realms.

(Mat 16:19 NIV) I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

Godly relations brings blessing through Holy Spirit.

(Psa 133:1 NIV) A song of ascents. Of David. How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!

(Psa 133:2 NIV) It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron's beard, down upon the collar of his robes.

(Psa 133:3 NIV) It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the LORD bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.

It is the intention of the enemy Satan to pervert God's plans.

(Acts 13:10 NIV) "You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord?

Relationships that are not Godly brings bondage through unholy spirits.

(Eph 2:2 NIV) in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

(Eph 2:3 NIV) All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.

1. What is a Soul- tie ?

A soul-tie is a real bond that holds is in an enduring relationship with another person

(Acts 4:32 NIV) All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had.

(Phil 2:2 KJV) Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

(Phil 2:20 KJV) For I have no man like-minded, who will naturally care for your state.

In the letter to the Philipian church Paul pleads with the church members to be "like minded". In the Greek this word is "sumpsuche" which means "like souled". In other words, Paul was exhorting them to be "soul-tied" in a Godly way.

In the verse 20, the translation of "like-minded" is "identically souled". i.e.. of a kindred spirit.

The soul is the area of the mind, the will and the emotions.

When we form "soul-ties", it involves our mind, will and emotions.

2. What is a body tie?

The body element in a body/soul spirit-tie is sometimes referred to "one flesh bonding" Paul in his letter gave a very stern warning in his letter to the Corinthians.

(1 Cor 6:16 NIV) Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, "The two will become one flesh."

A Godly body-tie is in marriage

(Mal 2:15 NIV) Has not the LORD made them one? In flesh and spirit they are his. And why one? Because he was seeking godly offspring. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith with the wife of your youth.

What is a spirit-tie?

In the same scripture above we also see illustrated the spiritual-tie that exists between man and wife.

Human sex is a spiritual act

We cover the spiritual aspect of sexuality in depth, on our teaching on Godly sex and sexuality but we need at this point re-establish again at this point why this is so.

(Gen 4:1 KJV) And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.

In this scripture the word "knew" is the same word for us "knowing" God. Knowing is spirit to spirit. Again we emphasise that we are primarily spirit beings. "Knowing" God is a spiritual thing, just as Adam "knowing" Eve was a spiritual thing. In contrast we read that David "lay" with Bathsheba. Outside the Godly order of the marriage covenant, there can be no nurture of the spirit, but there can be spirit mingling, an ungodly sort of spirit-tie between the couple. This tie of course will have implications in the spiritual realms.

Using the term body/soul/spiritual-tie is a convenient shorthand for describing a relationship bond that exists on earth, and its parallel in the heavenly realms.

A good illustration of the purpose of a body/soul and spirit tie is to look at the purpose of the umbilical cord between infant and mother, which is designed to have a two way flow.

A body/soul/spirit-tie has a two way flow between two people which in Godly order enables nurture and nourishment between them both.

In Godly order, for a disciple of Jesus this nurturing will be of God too through Holy Spirit, who resides in both, but is also of the spiritual realm of heaven.

Unfortunately, in ungodly order, this two way access to both persons can give rise to an ungodly spiritual-tie between the two people in the spiritual realms, a route the enemy exploits to soil, corrupt, control and weaken the individuals. Consider in this age of "liberated sex" the implications in the spiritual realms, as well as in our society on earth.

God intended that spirit/soul and body-ties be used as a two way channel of blessing, nourishment and nurture

We can liken it to a three stranded umbilical cord that exists in the spiritual realm

Generational links and body, soul and spirit-ties

A body/soul/spirit-tie becomes established when there is a relationship with someone. We can have a body/soul/spirit-tie with our families as well as a generational links.

Normally body/soul/spirit-ties are with people we have been in a relationship with, or those we worship or idolise.

Generational links are formed through the bloodline, even if we do not personally know the person involved.

Who do we have Body/Soul/Spirit-ties with?

With our family as a result of our births, with those family members with whom we have, or have had a personal relationship.

It has developed with other people as a result of the decisions and choices we make.

It was forced upon us by individuals who chose to abuse or control us in various ways.

With sexual partners with whom we become "one flesh"..

Godly and ungodly Body/Soul/Spirit-ties

Body/soul/Spirit-ties can therefore be Godly (according to God's plan and purpose for mankind) or ungodly (contrary to God's plan and purposes)

When the boundaries of God's purposes are transgressed, (or example, a father dominates or sexually abuses his daughter), ungodly Body/Soul and Spirit-ties can be established between those who are already joined in Godly Body/Soul and Spirit-ties.

Godly Body/Soul/Spirit-ties lead to spiritual health and whole(some)ness

Ungodly Body/Soul/Spirit-ties lead to sickness. (can be spirit, soul or body)

God has made mankind to have Free will

God gave mankind the gift of free will when He made him. Despite the fact that man used this gift to turn his back on his creator (through sin), God did not take away his ability to choose. God will not compel anybody to have a relationship with him but gives man the choice. He gives us this choice to relate with others as we choose, and lead the life we want.

He has given us the opportunity to re-enter the covenant relationship with Himself, which was destroyed with the advent of sin. It is His desire that through faith in Jesus Christ, and His death and resurrection, mankind should do this

We are made in the image of God.

(Gen 1:26 NIV) Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

(John 14:8 NIV) Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us."

(John 14:9 NIV) Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?

(John 14:10 NIV) Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.

(John 14:11 NIV) Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.

Among the many things revealed to us about the Father in Jesus was His attitude to others and His attitude to us. It was His Father living in Him and He showed us in light and truth the real mind of God. Jesus never went against the free will choice of anyone, nor did He dominate or control them against their will. For Him to do so would run contrary to His own creative ordinance. For us to do so is direct rebellion against God's plans and purpose in dealing with our fellow creatures.

Note: Godly discipline for those whom we have a care responsibility is not the same as domination and control.

(1 Sam 15:23 KJV) For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

Domination and control of others plays a large part in the practice of witchcraft, often by fear or demonic intervention. These are the methods of Satan. It is well to be reminded that when domination and manipulation are used against people with whom we have body/soul/spirit-ties, the effects can be as devastating as the use of direct witchcraft.

What are Godly Body/Soul/Spirit-ties

They are channels through which God chooses to give His blessings

Husband and wife

Child with parent(s)

Brothers and sisters with each other

Close relationships within the wider family circle

Among special friends and companions

With brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus

Examples in scripture

Marriage partners:

(Mat 19:4 NIV) "Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,'

(Mat 19:5 NIV) and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'?

Ruth clung to Naomi:

(Ruth 1:14 NIV) At this they wept again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-by, but Ruth clung to her.

(Ruth 1:15 NIV) "Look," said Naomi, "your sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods. Go back with her."

(Ruth 1:16 NIV) But Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.

(Ruth 1:17 NIV) Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me."

Jacob and Benjamin:

(Gen 44:22 NIV) And we said to my lord, 'The boy cannot leave his father; if he leaves him, his father will die.'

(Gen 44:23 NIV) But you told your servants, 'Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.'

(Gen 44:24 NIV) When we went back to your servant my father, we told him what my lord had said.

(Gen 44:25 NIV) "Then our father said, 'Go back and buy a little more food.'

(Gen 44:26 NIV) But we said, 'We cannot go down. Only if our youngest brother is with us will we go. We cannot see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us.'

(Gen 44:27 NIV) "Your servant my father said to us, 'You know that my wife bore me two sons.

(Gen 44:28 NIV) One of them went away from me, and I said, "He has surely been torn to pieces." And I have not seen him since.

(Gen 44:29 NIV) If you take this one from me too and harm comes to him, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in misery.'

(Gen 44:30 NIV) "So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy's life,

(Gen 44:31 NIV) sees that the boy isn't there, he will die. Your servants will bring the gray head of our father down to the grave in sorrow.

Jonathan and David:

(1 Sam 20:17 NIV) And Jonathan had David reaffirm his oath out of love for him, because he loved him as he loved himself.

Christ's body:

(1 Cor 10:17 NIV) Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.

Believers in Jerusalem:

(Acts 4:32 NIV) All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had.

What are ungodly Body/Soul/Spirit-ties?

Relationships that are not based on Godly principles, and are not channels of blessings,

will result in ungodly body/soul/spirit-ties. The relationships will may also involve something of abuse (all types), violence, anger, fear, manipulation, domination or control.

Sexual partners other than husband and wife.

Husband and wife - when the marriage is out of harmony and distorted in God's purpose.

Parent(s) with child - when the parents obstruct or prevent the child to individuate and become a mature adult, independent of their control and domination.

Child with parent -when an undisciplined child manipulates and controls the parents

Abuse-All relationships which are, or have become abusive ( through sexual, emotional, physical or psychological manipulation)

Domination- All relationships where there is an ungodly dominance of one person by another

Leadership-In Christian fellowships where control and domination by man is passed off as being Holy Spirit leading

Occult control - People who (sometimes unknowingly) use occult power to exercise control.

Note. Fear of a person with whom you are in a relationship, is a likely indicator that there is some form of ungodly body/soul/spirit-tie

Examples in scripture

Shechem lay with Dinah by force: (Gen 34:2 KJV) And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.

(Gen 34:3 KJV) And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.

(Prov 5:20 NIV) Why be captivated, my son, by an adulteress? Why embrace the bosom of another man's wife?

(Prov 5:21 NIV) For a man's ways are in full view of the LORD, and he examines all his paths.

(Prov 5:22 NIV) The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast.

Sexual partners:

(1 Cor 6:15 NIV) Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never!

(1 Cor 6:16 NIV) Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, "The two will become one flesh."

Controlling relationships:

(Gen 27:6 NIV) Rebekah said to her son Jacob, "Look, I overheard your father say to your brother Esau,

(Gen 27:7 NIV) 'Bring me some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat, so that I may give you my blessing in the presence of the LORD before I die.'

(Gen 27:8 NIV) Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you:

(Gen 27:9 NIV) Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats, so I can prepare some tasty food for your father, just the way he likes it.

(Gen 27:10 NIV) Then take it to your father to eat, so that he may give you his blessing before he dies."

Body/Soul/Spirit-ties that are a mixture of Godly and ungodly.

Ungodly body/soul/spirit-ties can be established between those already joined in a

Godly body/soul/spirit-tie, if an existing relationship goes wrong.

(Gen 4:8 NIV) Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

Only one body/soul/spirit-tie can exist between two people, but that one tie can have both a Godly and an ungodly element. Where there is a mixture of a Godly tie and an ungodly tie, it is like having two three stranded cords braided together, each with a two way flow.

Examples from scripture

King Solomon:

(1 Ki 11:1 NIV) King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh's daughter--Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites.

(1 Ki 11:2 NIV) They were from nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, "You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods." Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love.

(1 Ki 11:3 NIV) He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray.

Church in Corinth:

(1 Cor 1:10 NIV) I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought.

(1 Cor 1:11 NIV) My brothers, some from Chloe's household have informed me that there are quarrels among you

How do Body/Soul/Spirit-ties effect us?

The sinfulness, or Godliness of one person affects the well being of the other.

Through sin Satan can hi-jack what God intended to be channels of blessing. The enemy can take advantage of ungodly body/soul/spirit-ties, using them as a means of transporting demonic influence from one person to another. For example, ungodly sex leaves each partner vulnerable, as demonic influence can pass between them by means of the ungodly body/soul/spirit-tie which is established in the spiritual realm. However, the matter does not need there. It is common today that people practice casual sex frequently with different partners. Each coupling sets up a fresh ungodly body/soul/spirit-tie to join the network that is being built up by Satan to use in his quest to thwart God's purpose and will.

Ungodly body/soul/spirit-ties are one of the most common routes by which Satan can hold us in bondage.

God however, in His Wisdom and Love has made a way to free us from the enemy and by His grace, when we accept Jesus as Saviour we set up a Godly body/soul/spirit-tie with Jesus and by Him the victory of breaking ungodly body/soul/spirit-ties.

(Rom 8:29 NIV) For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

(1 Cor 6:17 NIV) But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit.

Body/Soul/Spirit-ties and discipleship

To the new convert and those who are not so new, who strive along the path of discipleship ungodly body/soul/spirit-ties makes the journey more of a struggle and in some ways hazardous, because of the havoc the enemy is able to inflict with almost impunity into Christian lives.

Only Jesus Christ can break an ungodly body/soul/spirit-tie.
The breaking of ungodly body/soul/spirit-ties is a major key in healing and deliverance.
especially if the ties are with;

Because domination has persisted into adulthood, or when familial infirmities or generational curses are passed down the family lines

Sexual partners

Because of ungodly sexual activity - sometimes with multiple partners - the consequences are like a running sore when a Godly union is attempted. Is this high rate of infidelity and divorce, even among Christian couples a consequence of modern promiscuity?

Abusers of children

All abuse is ungodly and is fired by the enemy. Sexual abuse which is one of the commonest types of abuse is perhaps the most destructive, because it puts the spirit in bondage, twists, distorts and ravages the emotions, whilst the mind is full of lies, self hate, unlovable, shame, and guilt with unbearable pain and wretchedness.

When meeting the needs of such horror in peoples lives, we have to remember the promise of God’s Word, and know that He knows and shares such suffering.

(Heb 4:12 NIV) For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

(Heb 4:13 NIV) Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Destroying the enemy’s hold by the breaking of ungodly body/soul/spirit-ties

(Isa 61:1 NIV) The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,

(Luke 4:17 NIV) The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

(Luke 4:18 NIV) "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed,

(Luke 4:19 NIV) to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."

(Luke 4:20 NIV) Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him,

(Luke 4:21 NIV) and he began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."

Jesus came to proclaim liberty to the captives

In meeting the needs of the oppressed, spiritually weak or broken , physically lame or sick, those who are emotionally drained or scarred, it is often the case that ungodly body/soul/spirit-ties will bind them.

Jesus will cut these bonds if we allow Him to, but we have obligations too, in getting to the place where He can help us.

Confess our sin

(1 John 1:9 NIV) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Confess the sin(s) that are responsible for our position in unholy living

Repent (Turn away from your sin)

(Luke 13:5 NIV) I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish."

(Mat 6:14 NIV) For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

(Mat 6:15 NIV) But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

We need to forgive those who have abused or dominated us, or put us in to the state of fear.

This forgiveness of those who have taken advantage of us in relationships, that are, have been or have become, ungodly, is an essential foundation for breaking the bonds that wrongfully tie us to others.

It is not unusual, where healing or deliverance as not occurred during previous ministry, for this to occur immediately after the body/soul/spirit-ties to certain people have been broken Ungodly body/soul/spirit-ties are on of the most common of routes that Satan uses to hold us in bondage.

The breaking of ungodly body/soul/spirit-ties is integral part of the whole healing and deliverance ministry, and we advise that if you feel you a called to this work you may need to avail yourself some training under the auspices of experienced co-worker or ministry.

Such training is available world-wide, through Ellel Ministries International.
